5 Delicious Variations of Herring Under a Fur Coat: Perfect for Your New Year’s Table

Herring under a fur coat is a dish that is definitely worth preparing for New Year or another important celebration.

We offer five variations of this dish. You will need to appreciate the herring:

  • with egg;
  • in a sauce made from sour cream and mustard;
  • in the form of a roll;
  • with apple, cream cheese, and pomegranate seeds;
  • in an inverted version.

Herring under a fur coat with egg

  • Lightly salted herring fillet — 2 pcs.
  • Potatoes — 4 pcs.
  • Beets — 2 pcs.
  • Eggs — 3 pcs.
  • Onion — 1 pc.
  • Carrot — 1 pc.
  • Mayonnaise — to taste;
  • Spices — to taste.

Boil the vegetables, then, after cooling, peel them and grate them. Cut the fish into small pieces (remove bones if necessary). Dice the onion. Lay all the ingredients on a plate, forming layers:

  1. Potato
  2. Onion
  3. Fish fillet
  4. Carrot
  5. Eggs
  6. Beet

Between the layers, add a net of mayonnaise. Put the appetizer in the refrigerator for two hours, then serve it.

Herring under a fur coat with sour cream and mustard sauce

  • Lightly salted herring — 250 g
  • Beet — 300 g
  • Carrot — 200 g
  • Potatoes — 230 g
  • Eggs — 3 pcs.
  • Green onion — a few feathers
  • 20% sour cream — 250 g
  • Grainy mustard — 40 g
  • Olive oil — 15 ml
  • Salt — 1/2 tsp.

Boil the vegetables, let them cool, then peel and grate them on a medium grater. Hard-boiled eggs are freed from the shells, cut in half, egg whites are grated, and yolks are chopped finely.

Cut the fillet into small cubes. Chop the greens. Prepare the sauce by mixing sour cream with mustard, salt, and vegetable oil. Place the ingredients in a form with removable edges, spreading sauce on each layer, in the following order:

  1. Potato.
  2. Onion.
  3. Fish.
  4. Carrot.
  5. Whites.
  6. Beet.
  7. Yolks.

Put in the refrigerator for one hour, then carefully remove the form.

Roll with herring under a fur coat

  • Hard-boiled eggs — 2 pcs.
  • Lightly salted herring fillet — 500 g
  • Beets — 500 g
  • Potatoes — 300 g
  • Carrots — 200 g
  • Mayonnaise — to taste
  • Onion — 1 pc.

Boil the vegetables, peel them, and grate them on a fine grater. Cut the onion into small cubes. Grate the eggs as well.

Cut the fish into medium-thickness pieces. Lay plastic wrap on a work surface.

Arrange the beets in a thin rectangle and spread with mayonnaise. Then carefully layer.

In the center of the setup, place the fish. Gently lift the wrap to roll all the ingredients into a roll. Place it in the cold for about one hour, then carefully remove the wrap.

Herring under a fur coat with apple, cream cheese, and pomegranate seeds

  • Lightly salted herring fillet — 2 pcs.
  • Carrot — 2 pcs.
  • Beet — 2 medium pcs.
  • Potato — 3 pcs.
  • Granny Smith apple — 1 pc.
  • Cream cheese — 150 g
  • Hard-boiled eggs — 3 pcs.
  • Pomegranate — 1/2 pc. (only seeds)
  • Salt and pepper — to taste
  • Green onion — a few feathers

Grate the boiled and peeled vegetables coarsely. Cut the eggs, grate the whites coarsely, and the yolks finely. Cut the herring into small cubes.

Grate the apple pulp coarsely as well. In one bowl, mix the cream cheese and mayonnaise thoroughly. Layer the ingredients as follows:

  1. Potato.
  2. Fish.
  3. Apple.
  4. Carrot.
  5. Whites.
  6. Beet.
  7. Yolks.

Each level should be spread with sauce based on cream cheese. Garnish the salad with pomegranate seeds and chopped onion, then place it in the refrigerator for two hours.

Herring under a fur coat in an inverted version

  • Lightly salted herring fillet — 2 pcs.
  • Potato — 4 pcs.
  • Medium-sized beets — 2 pcs.
  • Hard-boiled eggs — 3 pcs.
  • Onion — 1 pc.
  • Carrot — 1 pc.
  • Mayonnaise and spices — to taste
  • Vegetable oil — 1 tsp.

Grate the boiled and peeled vegetables on a medium grater. Cut the eggs, freed from the shells, into small cubes.

Also finely chop the onion. Mix the prepared mayonnaise with spices and add it to each component, avoiding mixing them together. Grease the salad bowl with oil. Then carefully layer, pressing them down with a spoon:

  1. Beet.
  2. Eggs.
  3. Carrot.
  4. Onion.
  5. Herring.
  6. Potato.

Cover the form with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. After that, cover the salad bowl with a serving plate and flip it over. Carefully remove the form, and the appetizer will remain on the plate.
